Ok so I've been seeing this article circulate... → m.guardian.co.uk

catscraftssatan:

and I think it’s a load of shit. Not the article itself, I believe in being aware and trying not to contribute to harming individuals and communities…but more about the argument it has seemed to spark between vegans and meat-eaters.

I saw this posted by a friend of a friend on Facebook with “my vegetarian friends need to read this, maybe they shouldn’t give me such a hard time about eating meat.”

This makes my blood boil. Just a total lack of knowledge and understanding. Firstly the fact that vegans are at the heart of this problem, according to the article. I’ve read my fair share of anti-vegan sentiments, but I just want to remind people that Oprah, Dr. Oz and company have all recommended quinoa to be eaten OFTEN in order to lose weight and be healthy. I would say statistically it’s safe to say most of the consumers in their audience are not vegan. Maybe some vegetarians. But mostly moms looking for healthy options for dinner.

Secondly, why do people (read: meat-eaters) think compassion must be confined to one species? We all know harm to the planet and animals (human included) can’t be ZERO, but I like to think I do my best to reduce my impact. I try to buy local organic. I try not to buy products after I read articles like this. Or from countries that abuse their workers. I think a lot of people do. BUT I recognize that not everyone can afford to do that and I don’t blame them. Sometimes I can’t afford to be totally ethical. It’s hard to find ethical food, all of the time. Growing all your own food isn’t realistic for a lot of people. You just have to do what you can. And for me, the easiest way to guarantee I’m not doing harm to animals and contributing to one of the cruelest industries around, is by simply NOT PURCHASING those products. That doesn’t mean I don’t care about immigrant workers, or the rights of other humans in countries outside of my own. It just means that I worry about those things IN ADDITION TO not eating meat. Veganism isn’t a black and white issue to me, nor do I treat it as such, but my basic belief is to care about ALL living things, and to view all sentient beings on the same level.

I guess my thing is that people shouldn’t be reading this article and saying “damn those vegans and health nuts, SEE! THIS is why I eat meat! You guys don’t care about PEOPLE!” they should read and think about changing their lifestyle to help bring about change, and share it with EVERYONE if it has made an impact on them, not just target a small (REALLY SMALL) group of individuals trying to do THEIR part how they see fit.

When you post an article like this saying “this is why I eat meat” you don’t make yourself the good guy, and vegans the bad guy. You’re an antagonist that probably doesn’t give a shit about anyone’s/anything’s rights but your own.
